It all depends where you are.

In Downtown Dallas, steady rain is pouring down, but the temperature is hovering around freezing and the ground is much warmer, preventing ice.

North and west, though, it's a much different story. In fact, several school districts decided to send students home early.

Bridgeport, Decatur, Mineral Wells, Poolville and Ranger ISDs are all sent students home before 2 p.m. due to icy conditions.

Some residents of Denton and The Colony in Denton County reported light freezing rain.

A freezing rain advisory expired at noon for the immediate Dallas-Fort Worth area and at 4 p.m. for outlying areas to the north and northwest, including Denton and Collin counties.

News 8 meteorologist Steve McCauley says freezing rain in the morning and early afternoon will cause some bridges and overpasses to begin icing over for the next few hours.

"The freezing rain will transition back to a cold rain in the afternoon as temperatures recover into the mid 30s," McCauley said. "Areas to the north and northeast of DFW may continue to see patches of freezing rain into the afternoon."

However, he says, due to recent warm weather the ground and road surfaces are above freezing and widespread ice accumulations are not expected.

The weather left about 17,000 utility customers across North Texas were without electricity as of 1 p.m., said Jeamy Molina, an Oncor spokeswoman. About 8,000 of those without power were in Dallas.

The outages caused signals at several intersections in Dallas to malfunction, police said.

American Airlines and its partner American Eagle cancelled a few dozen flights from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport because of freezing rain. Some arriving flights at D/FW were being delayed about an hour and a half, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

There were no major traffic accidents reported.

And there is more good news. McCauley is forecasting a warm-up with high temperatures in the mid-50s Tuesday, 60s Wednesday and nearing 70 by Thursday and Friday.
