Stretching Your Dollar

Brad Hawkins reports.

Does Christmas shopping drive you crazy?

In one case, it could be a good thing, saving you money.

"All our friends and family were continually asking us, 'I'm looking to purchase this. What's the best price you can find out there?'" said Shawn Mayeux.

Now Mayeux and three friends answer those questions every day for thousands of online bargain hunters through DeaLoco.com, the Web site they started more than two years ago.

"With people looking to save money, it's driving in more users out there, looking to save money," said Mayeux.

The Web site has had double the visitors since July - more shoppers looking for different deals.

"[They are looking for] baby and kid products, apparel and home. Whereas, in the past, electronics were really driving things," Mayeux added.

What makes DeaLoco different is the "grief factor" it assigns to every entry. For example, mail-in rebates trigger a higher "grief factor" than instant rebates.

We had Mayeux search for three gift ideas.

The original price on an electronic photo frame was $199, but there's an instant $150 rebate.

For a 32-inch LCD HD television, there's a $311 instant rebate for a final price of $588.99. Some retailers are keeping $100 of that rebate for themselves and charging more for the same TV.

On Seven brand jeans, we found instant savings of $37.80 for a final price of $16.20.

It all adds up to hundreds of dollars in savings on three popular holiday gifts.
