False social security numbers

Monika Diaz reports.

The Dallas Independent School District is facing a new problem.

This time, a federal agency told News 8 it will look into DISD's use of false social security numbers for new hires from other countries.

The Social Security Administration is looking into it.

It wants to see if it needs to launch a formal investigation.

This comes after a district report that says the district has been giving false social security numbers for several years to new hires.

The numbers were temporary until these employees received real ones.

But in some cases, the fake numbers the district gave out were real, according to reports.

DISD handed out fake social security numbers to get foreign citizens on the payroll.

The illegal practice is laid out in a report by the district's office of professional responsibility.

The investigation revealed that the Texas Education Agency discovered the problem back in 2004 and the DISD continued to use it until this past summer.

Dale Kaiser of the National Education Association in Dallas call this latest investigation an embarrassment.

"Not only is it illegal. It is just down right incompetent," said Kaiser.

He says the district's administration needs an overhaul.

"I think we need to clean house. I think we got to start at the top and work our way down," he said.

"The time has come to stop this stupidity."

According to the report, 26 of the false numbers were still being used past July.

They were given to new hires trying to get certified by the state.

It turns out, all 26 of those numbers belonged to people living in Pennsylvania.

The district now says the problem has been corrected and is following proper procedure.

Board trustee, Ron Price, is frustrated at yet another embarrassing blow to the district.

"Whoever is responsible for this needs to be prosecuted to the full extent of federal and state law," he said.

There is no word if any disciplinary action was taken or if anyone was fired but now the Social Security Administration office here in Dallas is looking into the matter to see if any action needs to be taken against the district.
