DALLAS — The fiery crash of a gasoline tanker on Sunday afternoon caused irreparable damage to a highway overpass in South Dallas, officials said.

It will force the emergency demolition of the State Highway 310 bridge at the intersection of U.S. Highway 175.

After comprehensive engineering tests, the Texas Department of Transportation said both the northbound and southbound spans of the Highway 310 need to be replaced because of extensive damage done by the fire and heat that resulted when the tanker blew out a tire and crashed on the exit ramp to U.S. 175.

In a statement, TxDOT said demolition will commence as soon as the money and manpower can be allocated. It is not yet clear how long it will take before the overpass can be rebuilt.

It all means detours will be necessary for motorists until the work is complete.

Southbound traffic on U.S. 175 can take frontage roads to Hatcher Street; then take Hatcher to Lamar Street or 2nd Avenue to get back to U.S. 175 or to enter Highway 310.

Northbound traffic on Highway 310 can exit at Lamar Street and either proceed to Interstate 45 or to Hatcher Street to get on U.S. 175.

If possible, motorists can avoid the area entirely by using I-45 as an alternate route.
