Las Vegas ready to hire laid-off Dallas teachers
10:48 AM CDT on Tuesday, September 30, 2008
The Las Vegas strip, famous for its glitz and glamour and notorious for taking a paycheck or two, may soon be taking some of our teachers.
With nearly 700 teaching jobs on the line, trustee Ron Price traveled to Las Vegas yesterday, to meet with educators there.
It was a chance to start a dialogue with one of the only districts nationwide hiring in great numbers and who seem more than interested to consider our teachers who are expected to be laid off.
"If there are a large number of candidates available in the Dallas area, we will be dispatching recruitment teams right away to interview these people," said deputy human resources officer of Clark County school district, Bill Garis.
It's not only a vacation hot spot but Clark County, Nevada, is home to the fifth largest school district in the country.
More than 310,000 students are enrolled.
It is currently looking to hire nearly 400 teachers.
It is welcome news for teachers' unions in the midst of so much turmoil.
"Being able to offer people an opportunity to get a firm position in a school district which is reaching out and saying we want you is the first bit of good news we have really seen in a long time," said Aimee Bolender, president of the AFT/Alliance union.
Clark County says it has openings in three major skill sets.
It's looking for middle and high school math and science teachers and special ed teachers for all grades.
Like many here, Las Vegas officials are keeping a close eye on DISD's next move, and admit our employees have a tactical advantage.
"A district like Dallas ISD would certainly have an advantage with us over a lot of districts because the teachers there are dealing with the same issues that we are looking for," said Garis.
But whether teachers will be willing to relocate for their profession will certainly be gamble.
Clark county officials say depending on DISD's actions in the coming days, it could start taking out advertising in the area and send those recruiters over on a day's notice.
