FORT WORTH — More than a million wooden pallets fueled a huge two-alarm fire early Thursday in south Fort Worth.

Flames from the fire, at Metroplex Wood Products in the 2300 block of West Risinger Road, could be seen rising in the morning sky from miles away.

Risinger and Crowley roads were expected to be closed until late Thursday afternoon to give firefighters access to the scene. A few families who live nearby were evacuated as a precaution.

"It was scary looking," said Joyce McCowen, who owns an adjacent business that was cut off by the firefighting equipment. "There were so many vehicles around that were emergency vehicles that you wouldn't want to get in their way, so it's best to block it off and be safe."

The fire continued to burn at noon, nine hours after it started, and Fort Worth firefighters said extinguishing it would be an all-day affair.

Thousands of gallons of water were being used at the rural fire site, isolated from other homes and businesses about a mile west of Interstate 35W.

Firefighters said the building housing the Metroplex Wood Products manufacturing facility was intact, but much of its inventory of pallets was destroyed.

The next part of the job included using a backhoe to segregate the burning wood products from those that hadn't yet ignited.

No injuries were reported.
