IRVING -- Keith Davis left Dallas hoping to do more than play special teams. He is back with the Cowboys in his specialized role after things didn't work out in Miami.

Davis re-signed Wednesday with the Cowboys, nearly six months after the safety signed a two-year, $3.5 million free agent deal hoping for a chance to be a defensive starter with the Dolphins. He was cut before Miami's final preseason game.

"They were looking for one thing. I was looking for another," Davis said. "It was no big deal. It just didn't work. ... It's truly a blessing to be back."

In five seasons with the Cowboys, Davis went from undrafted rookie free agent to being a special teams standout. Davis, the special teams captain last season, expects to play in the opener Sunday at Cleveland.

The Cowboys had already cleared a spot on their 53-man roster when they waived cornerback Evan Oglesby on Tuesday.

Believing he had a chance to become a starter in Miami, Davis left the Cowboys in March to join new Dolphins coach Tony Sparano, a former Cowboys assistant. He was also reunited with new Miami assistant head coach and secondary coach Todd Bowles, who was the Cowboys' secondary coach the past three years.

Davis was asked repeatedly why things didn't work out with the Dolphins. He kept smiling, offering the same answer and saying he was happy to be back in Dallas.

"I always felt at the end of the day I'd end up playing in Dallas even if I was gone a year or two," Davis said.

Or only a few months.

Davis, who has 77 career tackles on special teams, even got back his No. 29 jersey. Rookie running back Tashard Choice had that number, but switched to No. 23 after Davis asked for his old number back.

"He will have some things coming his way," Davis said, without being specific. "I'm going to take care of him. I appreciate it. It wasn't difficult to get it out of him."
