Girl burned on playground equipment

FORT WORTH - A North Texas family says their second grader was burned at school in what may seem an unlikely way.
Tri'Shonia Smith-Kelly loves recess, almost as much as she loves her second grade science class.
But both activities are harder because of what happened Thursday at her Fort Worth elementary school, leaving her hands in bandages.
"She was on the monkey bars at Christene Moss and what happened then, she was up on one of the metal parts and it burned her," said Willie Kelly, her grandmother.
The school nurse treated the seven-year-old and her grandmother took her to the Emergency Room.
"The right hand, the skin peeled off and the left one still has bumps coming up on her," Kelly said.
Tri-shonia's family is changing the bandages daily and say she should be fine.
A Fort Worth ISD spokesman declined an on-camera interview but tells us the school is unclear on whether the injury is heat or friction related, saying other children were not hurt.
But the risk is well known - on a 100-degree day, equipment can heat above 160 degrees.
At least one area district is taking extra precautions to protect their students from the sun.
Burleson ISD just bought $100,000 worth of shade structures for all their elementary schools.
"The best thing about it is it's about 30 degrees cooler than the Texas heat between the hours of 10 and 4. That's when things get intense," said Richard Crummel from Burleson ISD.
Tri-Shonia's grandmother has another, lower tech suggestion - a rule at the day care center she owns.
Always have an adult touch playground equipment before children are allowed near it.
