01:09 PM CDT on Thursday, July 3, 2008
A 27-year-old man is in critical condition after receiving serious burns during an explosion at an auto repair shop this morning, Fort Worth fire officials said.
Clifton Atkins, whose family owns Complete Automotive Repair in the 5200 block of White Settlement Road, was changing a fuel pump around 10 a.m. when workers heard an explosion and found the car and Mr. Atkins enveloped in flames, said Lt. Kent Worley of the Fort Worth Fire Department.
Mr. Atkins’ brother pulled him away from the car and pushed him to the ground to help put them out as workers used fire extinguishers to battle the fire.
Mr. Atkins was transported by helicopter to Parkland Memorial Hospital with second- and third-degree burns from the waist up, Lt. Worley said.
Two other vehicles were damaged in the fire. All that remains of the car Mr. Atkins was working on is a burned-out shell, Lt. Worley said. Firefighters estimate the damage at $45,000.
The cause of the explosion is still unknown.
