FW drowning victim was trying to get daughter's mattress

After hours of searching, Fort Worth Fire-Rescue diving teams pulled the body of a drowned 45-year-old man from Marine Creek Lake, fire officials said.

Martin Tavera was spending the day with friends and family Wednesday near Marine Creek Parkway and Northwest Loop 820 when he swam to retrieve his daughter’s air mattress, witnesses told firefighters.

He began yelling for help more than 75 yards off shore. 

Despite efforts by other swimmers to reach him, Mr. Tavera went under around 7:30 p.m. He was found around 10 p.m
