DALLAS — Two cousins admit killing two musicians outside their Garland recording studio. Now they want you to know how it all happened.
In a stunning jailhouse interview, James Broadnax and Demarius Cummings explained how they committed the murders for money and only ended up with $2.
Broadnax, showing no remorse, coldly described how he and his cousin went to Garland last week to rob someone. "I needed money; I needed a car," he said.
The men spotted Steve Swan and his best friend Matthew Butler outside Butler's Christian recording studio in downtown Garland. The suspects said they talked to the men for about 30 minutes before robbing them.
"I asked the dude for a cigarette, and and when he pulled out the cigarette, that's when my cousin came from up under his shirt with the gun and opened fire," Cummings said.
Broadnax admitted that he's the one who shot Swan and Butler. He also said he has no feelings for his victims or their families. "Do I look like I got remorse?" Broadnax asked.
Cummings said he wasn't exepecting anyone to get killed, but said originally they were planning to use an assault rifle as their weapon.
"We had an AK-47, but we couldn't use that because that was too big for a robbery, so I went — we went and got — and used the handgun from one of my partners," Cummings recalled.
After killing their victims, the jailed suspects realized that all the men had in their wallets combined was $2.
"Just $2? I said the same thing. Just $2? All this over $2," Cummings said.
Broadnax and Cummings were caught in Texarkana, Texas after one of their aunts turned them in. Both said they aren't angry at her for doing that.
"Justice was going to be served anyway," Cummings said.
The two suspects face capital murder charges and are being held on $1 million bond each.
