MEDINA COUNTY, Texas — A horrific crash on Interstate 35 killed at least two people and injured several others near Natalia, Texas, just after 3 a.m. Monday.

Just one vehicle was involved in the accident: a full-size Ford passenger van carrying 15 people from the Fort Worth area. The group was traveling to Mexico on a vacation.

Texas Department of Public Safety investigators said it appears that a tire on the van blew out about 30 miles southwest of San Antonio. The vehicle rolled over and landed upside-down in the median.

Raul Plata was traveling just a few feet ahead of the van. He said that he saw smoke coming out of the median after the accident.

"There were people screaming, and a lady was screaming about her son being down there on the wreckage," Plata said.

Two people died at the scene, an adult male and a 15-year-old boy.

An unidentified woman is consoled by emergency workers.

Thirteen others were taken to area hospitals; three of them were airlifted from the scene due to the nature of their injuries.

Investigators believe that most of the victims shared the same last name and were from the same family.

The cause of the accident was under investigation.

The wreck comes less than one day after five people in a minivan were killed at a Plano intersection when another vehicle ran a red light.
