Gunman at large after Dallas slaying
12:46 PM CDT on Monday, June 23, 2008
DALLAS — Dallas police were searching Monday for a man accused of fatally shooting the boyfriend of his pregnant 14-year-old ex-girlfriend.
Manuel Martinez, 20, was shot around 10:30 p.m. Sunday at home in the 2900 block of Michigan Avenue. He was taken to Methodist Central Hospital, where he died.
Police said they had an arrest warrant for Cristobal Carrillo Jaimes, 18. They said he is believed to be the father of the child that the 14-year-old is carrying.
Despite searches at multiple locations, he remained at large late Monday morning.
Jaimes' mother, Florencia Carrillo, said her son was upset that Martinez had threatened to kill him. Interviewed in Spanish, she said her son told relatives that Martinez was constantly picking fights with him.
Carrillo said the girl's family asked Jaimes for money to help pay her medical bills. Jaimes, she said, is a dropout who works for his stepfather's carpet business but doesn't get paid. She said her son wasn't sure if the baby was his and that he wanted a DNA test done when the baby was born before contributing financially.
Carrillo, crying, said she wanted her son to give himself up.
According to police, Jaimes got into an argument with the victim and left the scene, but later returned. Martinez was shot while he was in his vehicle.
The 14-year-old is eight months pregnant, Sgt. Gene Reyes said.
“He wanted her back and she didn’t want him,” he said. “It’s a senseless, jealous act.”
