A young woman who recently graduated South Grand Prairie High School has died from injuries sustained in a snorkeling trip to Cancun over the weekend, according to the Dallas County Medical Examiner's office.

Lisa Thang Chung, 18, had been on life support after suffering heart and lung failure when the catamaran she and other students were riding on sank between Cancun and Isla Mujeres.

Ms. Chung was among about 10 students on the trip organized to celebrate high school graduation.

Her friend and classmate Loren Dailey told News 8 that the women were together when the accident occured.

“We had life vests on so we were coming back up, and the next thing we know when we come back up there was a boat on top of us," Ms. Dailey said. "And not like pinning us down, but I mean, that’s all I could feel. We were pushed up to the bottom of, I believe it’s a rescue boat that came in and didn’t know we were underneath the water."

Ms. Dailey said she took in a lot of water and briefly lost consciousness. She recovered, but Ms. Dailey stayed under the water longer.

Danh Thikim Chung, who flew to Cancun after the accident, said her daughter was going on a trip on the Sea Star boat for her summer vacation.

A preliminary report by the port captain said the boat, owned by Caribbean Carnival, appeared to be carrying 126 people. It is authorized to carry 80.

Sea Star Captain Agustin Cituk denied it was overloaded, saying the boat has a capacity of 250 people.

Bianca Jones, 18, a golf teammate with at least one of the seniors, said she considered joining the trip.

"Now I'm glad I didn't," she said.

Ollie Dailey, Ms. Dailey's father, said the trip was organized through a national company, GradCity. Representatives for the business that specializes in student trips and its Massachusetts-based parent company, StudentCity.com, could not be reached for comment Monday.

"We're still not getting a lot of information," Mr. Dailey said. "Our daughter is OK. There's a lot of concern for the student that was hurt. We're just trying to get them back and work from there."

A trust fund has been set up to help pay for Chung's medical expenses. The trust fund is set up at Grand Bank in Grand Prairie. The bank has two locations in Grand Prairie, which are at 2341 S. Beltline Road and 530 S. Carrier Parkway. There is also a Grand Bank in Dallas, which is located at 1322 North Beckley Ave. Donations can be made at all the locations.
