Planes collide at Roanoke airport

ROANOKE — Two single-engine planes tangled in an improbable crash at Northwest Regional Airport in Roanoke Thursday afternoon.
One plane was reportedly taxiing into position for takeoff on the airport's single runway when a second aircraft came down right on top of it.
The end result looks like a perfectly-planned stunt from a James Bond movie.
The landing gear of the second plane — with a student pilot and instructor in the cockpit — became wedged in the wings of the first plane and they were locked together at an odd angle. The plane on the bottom remained on the runway; the one on top has its propeller interlocked with the first and its tail angled toward the sky.
No injuries were reported.
News 8 has learned that the two pilots are neighbors. Prior to the accident, the pilots talked to one another on the radio; each apparently thought the other had agreed to yield.
Northwest Regional Airport is located three miles from the Texas Motor Speedway and bills itself as the largest privately-owned airport in the U.S.
WFAA-TV reporter Jason Whitely in Roanoke contributed to this report.
