DALLAS — A police standoff with a suicidal man shut down a stretch of Interstate 35E for several hours overnight.

The incident ended at Parkland Memorial Hospital, where the entrance of the emergency room was also closed as a result.

Police said it all began around 2 a.m. on I-35E at Camp Wisdom Boulevard after the suspect called a suicide hotline. Counselors called police, and officers found the man in his vehicle.

The man fled and began leading police on a stop-and-go, 30-mile pursuit through the city. The chase prompted the shutdown of of I-35E between Colorado Boulevard, just south of downtown, and Motor Street, just north.

The man would get out of his vehicle, threaten to take his life, and then start driving again.

The suspect then drove his vehicle to Parkland, where police sealed off all the entrances. It took negotiators 15 minutes to convince the man to surrender without further incident.

No one was hurt.
