DALLAS — Highway crews made emergency repairs to an Interstate 30 bridge near the Trinity River in Dallas overnight after a large hole materialized in the westbound lanes.

The major east-west artery linking Dallas and Fort Worth was shut down entirely when the 3-1/2 by 1-1/2 foot hole developed around 11 p.m. Sunday in the Beckley Avenue overpass on the west bank of the Trinity.

The eastbound lanes were reopened after a safety inspection, but by daybreak only one westbound lane of I-30 was getting through at the start of the Monday morning rush hour.

Texas Department of Transportation workers reinforced the gap and used quick-drying cement to patch the hole. The repairs were completed ahead of schedule at 6:45 a.m., but residual traffic backups could linger through the rush hour.

Motorists can use Commerce Street to Sylvan Avenue as a backup route.

The cause of the hole was not determined.
