DALLAS -- Hexter Elementary in East Dallas is an exemplary school in academics, extra curricular programs -- and the campus was out-ahead in implementing what's now a district-wide recycling movement.
It's a different kind of recycling-- of very personal information-- that worries one man after what he found right there on the campus.
Perched atop a full recycling bin, behind Hexter Elementary School in East Dallas was an ID thief's potential windfall.
People dropping off their recyclables in an Old Lake Highlands neighborhood wondered what we were up to. Camille Freitas couldn't believe it. “Oh, my gosh. Staff information, social security, phone number, children,” said Freitas.
Dozens of DISD personnel records dating back seven years -- a complete picture, down to education, emergency contacts, hobbies.
“I am sure there are people that come around over here, looking in these dumpsters, looking for stuff,” said Freitas.
Dwayne Streetman also was shocked at what we had -- he drops off his recyclable papers shredded. “Everything I get with my name on it, I shred it,” said Streetman.
The principal told us there are policies and procedures in place -- that, in this case, simply were not followed. She regrets the oversight.
Just last week News 8 followed up on our investigation into grade fixing at Skyline High School by revealing details of an internal DISD investigation -- which also highlighted the improper disposal of student records at that campus.
In such a high-traffic area -- so much at stake, served-up in a box. “How easy it is. Once they get your social security -- you're gone and you're toast,” said Freitas.
