Several Fort Worth streets reopened after windows replaced

FORT WORTH -- All of the streets in downtown Fort Worth tonight have reopened. Police had to activate their emergency operations plan yesterday evening, with concerns about flying glass.

This after a pedestrian saw pieces of windows on the D.R. Horton tower on the sidewalk.

All eyes in Sundance Square are focused on the reflective glass window panes of the D.R. Horton Tower.

"Pieces of glass, and glass was falling. People were scared, and they were commenting about it," said Kathryn Jones, Marie Antoinette’s Fragrances.

Two windows are cracked, one fractured during the Wednesday night storms. "I heard that those windows were, each weighed 400 pounds," said Jones.

They do. And they're also 8 feet tall and 4 feet wide.

"When glass panel of this magnitude fall offs a building, especially when they're on the 24th floor, they don't fall just straight down. They have a tendency to get picked up by the wind," said Lt. Paul Henderson, Fort Worth Police.

The officers spent the afternoon scaling the Wells Fargo Building next door. They manually checked each window pane to make sure each of those where intact.

Parts of Main, Commerce, and Calhoun streets remained closed off for most of the day on Friday, while crews replaced the windows, shutting down several downtown hotspots.

"They came by, and in a matter of 10 to 15 minutes they made everybody leave the building," said Jusdon Bryant, Flying Saucer.

Dinner ended early at the Flying Saucer on Thursday. Customers slowly trickled back in for lunch today. All agree that this in an inconvenience, yes, but a welcome one considering the alternative.

"I don't want to get hit by flying glass. And I'm sure nobody else does either. So, I understand it's for safety reasons, and we're definitely going to comply with whatever the police feel is going to make it safe for everyone to come downtown," said Bryant.
