MESQUITE - After a mother of three was killed when she was hit by three cars while attempting to cross a busy highway, many are wondering why she made that fateful decision.
The last moments of 44-year-old Cynthia Simmons' life will haunt some who last saw her eating in a restaurant off Interstate 635 in Mesquite.
"I saw her crossing the parking lot and then I saw traffic start to back up and I told my mom, 'I hope that lady didn't get down on the highway and get hit,'" said one witness.
While Simmons decided to cross the busy highway, some have questioned why she didn't walk across the nearby bridge.
Witnesses said Simmons was hit by an 18-wheeler and two other cars in the southbound lane near Gross Road when she attempted to cross the busy highway at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
"You start to going through, maybe I should have done something?'" the witness said.
Meanwhile, her family is asking the same questions.
Her death came just days before she and her husband, Mike Simmons, were to celebrate their third wedding anniversary.
"Beautiful woman, Cynthia Simmons," Mr. Simmons said. "Mother, grandmother, hard worker - that was my baby."
Mr. Simmons said he left his wife at the restaurant believing she was going to call a friend who lived minutes away to pick her up.
"Why she didn't go over the overpass I don't know," he said.
Funeral arrangements for Mrs. Simmons are still pending.
