DALLAS -- A family visiting Dallas to get treatment to save their son are now victims of a crime. Thieves broke into their car and took just one bag. But they stole so much more.

Kyle Spriggs comes once a month from Oklahoma to Children's Medical Center for chemotherapy to treat a brain tumor, sitting hours at a time.

Video games help him escape the pain. “They keep his attention off sitting there, getting that medication that he knows is going to make him sick,” said Trish Spriggs, Kyle’s mother.

They are the little things that make him feel at ease, like stopping for breakfast at Denny’s before heading to the hospital. But after breakfast Tuesday morning, they walked out and found their car window smashed: thieves took everything that was important to Kyle.

“His games. His homework. His medication and his notebook with all of his…all of that stuff is in one bag,” said Spriggs.

All of it gone, a day before his birthday. “Shame on them for stealing something from my child that helps get through a really tough time,” said Spriggs.

Dallas Police couldn't catch the criminals, but the case moved them so much they wanted to help replace some of the things that were lost.

“We just expected them to do a police report and that be it. They did their job, above and beyond, to make his day,” said Spriggs.

They did, for a few moments, Kyle forgot about the broken car window, the stolen toys, and the chemo.

He just smiled.
