Weather blog: Snow is gone, problems linger

09:56 AM CST on Friday, March 7, 2008

From Staff Reports

Video

A new band of snow showers moved across parts of North Texas early this morning, dusting Dallas and some other places that didn't see freezing precipitation on Thursday.

But the added snowfall — coupled with melting snow that started to freeze up as temperatures fell this morning — proved to be a nightmare for rush hour commuters. Icy patches caused dozens of wrecks that shut down some freeways.

Dallas, Fort Worth and Arlington ISDs are open today. Check our online list for other school districts.

Hundreds of passengers who were stranded overnight at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport were hoping to catch a flight to their destinations today.

Here are the latest dispatches from our reporters and other sources:

8:50a We can see our shadow, and that's good news. Our base of operations these past five hours has the Churchill Way overpass just south of the High Five interchange on North Central Expressway. During that time, we saw snow falling, melting on the overpass, then freezing into a slick surface. Now it's melting and traffic is starting to flow again.
- Gary Reaves in North Dallas

8:49a Now that the sun has come out, traffic on Interstate 35E in Denton is moving again — quite a contrast from the picture just a few hours earlier when there were a series of ice-induced wrecks up and down this stretch of the freeway. There are just two minor accidents at this time reported on rural roads in Denton County.
- Johnathan Betz in Denton

8:48a A clearing sky and warming temperatures into the upper 40s today will melt the ice and make the going easier for this afternoon’s commute. But temperatures are expected to plunge into the upper 20s tonight and challenge motorists again Saturday morning. "Whatever residual moisture is left on the roadways will re-freeze, so we’ll have some problems tomorrow, especially on bridges and overpasses," said Jessica Schultz, a National Weather Service meteorologist.
- The Dallas Morning News

8:44a Several cars have spun out in the southbound lanes of Highway 67 near Cockrell Hill Road in Dallas. Traffic is light, so other motorists won't have a big problem getting around the wreck.
- Michael Scott, News 8 Traffic

This tandem trailer skidded on I-35E near Waxahachie.

8:25a A southbound moving van at I-35 and U.S. 287 near Waxahachie apparently hit a patch of ice, spun completely around and landed on its side. Workers are now removing contents from the trailer; northbound lanes of I-35 are closed.
- Troy Bush, HD Chopper 8 pilot over Ellis County

8:17a A light snow fell across parts of Central Texas this morning, a day after a storm system left as much as 9 inches of snow on northern parts of the state. Accumulation was around an inch or less.
- Associated Press

8:03a A driver has spun out in the southbound lanes of Highway 67 at Hampton Road and crashed into a median barrier in the HOV lane. The driver appears to be OK, but this and another accident about two miles south of here have kept traffic at a snail's pace in southern Dallas County. We've seen some paramedics responding in 4-wheel-drive vehicles to check out accident victims.
- Troy Bush, HD Chopper 8 pilot

7:51a Lines are getting longer at D/FW International Airport as the number of departure cancellations grows to 70 today. There is a great demand for seats between passengers who were stranded on Thursday and travelers who arriving this morning.
- Monika Diaz at D/FW Airport

7:48a It seems to be getting colder here at the High Five interchange. Even though the sun is out now, elevated road surfaces are still icy. When the snow moved through Dallas earlier this morning, it melted on impact, leaving roads wet. But now that the temperatures have fallen, the roads have iced up.
- Gary Reaves in North Dallas

7:47a We just saw a car spin out on this stretch of Interstate 35E in Denton that has been trouble-prone this morning. Denton County officials say they are working to clear at least six accidents right now. Both sides of I-35E are now open again, but traffic is moving slowly.
- Johnathan Betz in Denton

7:44a Yesterday, we had no traffic problems in Dallas County, which was too warm for snow to fall. This morning — with the overnight snow and colder temperatures — there ahve been dozens of wrecks as roads ice up.
- Alexa Conomos, News 8 Traffic

Sand trucks were out in force this morning.

7:32a we've lost count of a lot of these accidents. We're now flying over a car that rolled over in the downtown Dallas Mixmaster. It looks like the occupant was able to break out the windshield to escape.
- Troy Bush, HD Chopper 8 pilot

7:29a The Forest Lane exit just before Coit Road on North Central Expressway is a sheet of ice; traffic is jammed in both directions from Northwest Highway to LBJ Freeway.
- Alexa Conomos, News 8 Traffic

7:18a Several vehicles have spun out on U.S. 75 at Arapaho in Richardson.Use Greenville Avenue or the Dallas North Tollway as an alternate route. Traffic overall seems very light today; perhaps some motorists are waiting to go in late, others may be taking the day off.
- Michael Scott, News 8 Traffic

7:15a There are new problems at D/FW Airport as Friday passengers arrive and travelers who have been stranded since yesterday clamor for seats. Be sure to call your airline before leaving home today and plan to arrive at the airport several hours early. Southwest Airlines reports no delays or cancellations at Dallas Love Field.
- Monika Diaz at D/FW Airport

7:15a Few traffic problems were reported in Fort Worth and Tarrant County. The far northern parts of Tarrant County did get a bit icy along State Highway 114, said Val Lopez, public information office for the Fort Worth district of the Texas Department of Transportation. "We dodged a bullet here," Lopez said. "We haven’t seen anything terrible. Our guys were out all yesterday and last night. There were reports around Alliance (Airport) but nothing too bad."
- Debra Dennis, The Dallas Morning News

7:05a The Dallas North Tollway looks like a lot better bet for north-south traffic than North Central Expressay, where traffic continues to be jammed south of LBJ Freeway. An accident is clearing in the southbound lanes of U.S. 67 at Kiest Boulevard, but some lanes are blocked while sand trucks move to that location. If you can sit this one out, that's advisable; there should be a lot of improvement by 9 a.m. when the sun warms up the pavement and the ice is melted.
- Alexa Conomos, News 8 Traffic

7:02a There was no new snowfall overnight here in Little Elm, in eastern Denton County. Lawns and rooftops are coated with a couple of inches of snow; the street looks clear; the thermometer is right at 32 degrees.
- Walt Zwirko in Little Elm

6:50a Eastbound lanes of LBJ Freeway are shut down between Preston Road and North Central Expressway due to icy conditions. Use Forest Lane as an alternate route.
- Michael Scott, News 8 Traffic

6:39a Multiple problems now reported on North Central Expressway south of LBJ Freeway; ice is causing cars to spin out and some lanes are being closed. Some ramps on the High Five interchange are closed. Southbound lanes of U.S. 67 are closed at Hampton Road and Redbird Lane due to icy conditions.
- Alexa Conomos, News 8 Traffic

6:30a There's a new report of a jackknifed 18-wheeler — this one is on southbound Interstate 35E at U.S. 287 near Waxahachie.
- Alexa Conomos, News 8 Traffic

6:17a There have been three accidents in the past hour near the intersection of Interstate 35E and Teasley Lane in Denton. Southbound lanes of I-35E are shut down at this location as road crews wait for sand trucks to deal with a slippery overpass where an 18-wheeler skidded off the highway. A nearby parking lot is a sheet of ice and there are at least 6 inches of heavy snow on the ground. Traffic is now moving on northbound I-35E.
- Johnathan Betz in Denton

6:11a There's a new problem on LBJ Freeway at Coit Road in North Dallas; use Forest Lane as an alternate route. We have a fresh report of a wreck on Highway 67 at Hampton Road in Oak Cliff.
- Alexa Conomos, News 8 Traffic

6:06a Just as the morning rush hour is ramping up, bridges and overpasses here in North Dallas are starting to freeze over. We've observed the road surface icing up in just the past few minutes and cars are starting to move more gingerly on the High Five interchange at LBJ Freeway and North Central Expressway.
- Gary Reaves in North Dallas

6:05a Fort Worth ISD is open today.
- WFAA-TV

6:01a Bridges and overpasses continue to be problem areas. Cars are slowing to a crawl on at the High Five interchange at North Central Expressway and LBJ Freeway. We have a report that some cars are spinning out on U.S. 380 near McKinney on the Wilson Creek bridge. Give yourself an extra 30 minutes if you are driving this morning.
- Alexa Conomos, News 8 Traffic

5:59a If you're just waking up now, you missed the snowfall with big, fluffy flakes that moved through Dallas earlier this morning. The band of snow is now moving east of Dallas. Refreezing is becoming a problem as temperatures dip to or below 32 degrees.
- Meteorologist Greg Fields

5:55a Arlington ISD will be open today.
- WFAA-TV

5:53a Interstate 35E is reopened in both directions in Corinth after three weather-related accidents were cleared.
- Troy Bush, HD Chopper 8 pilot

5:40a There are two big problems on Interstate 35E in Denton near the Teasley overpass: A southbound 18-wheeler that has skidded down an embankment and another big rig that jacknifed in the northbound lanes. Northbound traffic is diverted to the service road and efforts to get the disabled tractor-trailer off the highway are at least temporarily stymied by the fact that heavy duty tow trucks don't have enough traction to do their work.
- Troy Bush, HD Chopper 8 pilot

5:39a We're getting more reports of ice problems on overpasses and elevated intersections. There are jackknifed 18-wheelers at LBJ Freeway and U.S. 80 in Mesquite; also at I-20 and I-35E.
- Alexa Conomos, News 8 Traffic

5:32a Temperatures are hovering at or below freezing in a wide area of North Texas, so that could cause problems for motorists on wet road surfaces.
- Meteorologist Greg Fields

5:25a In Denton, northbound Interstate 35E is closed at the Teasley overpass due to a jackknifed tractor-trailer. Traffic is being diverted to the service road. There are no reports of injuries.
- Troy Bush, HD Chopper 8 pilot

5:12a Interstate 35E is shut down in both directions between Swisher and Corinth Parkway in Corinth due to icing conditions. There are three weather-related single-vehicle accidents on that stretch of highway. Traffic has been diverted to service roads while sand trucks try to make I-35E passable.
- Troy Bush, HD Chopper 8 pilot

5:10am Dallas ISD is open today; students are expected to report to class. We're still waiting for word from other large districts.
- WFAA-TV

5:07a Texas Department of Transportation trucks spread de-icing fluid on bridges and overpasses overnight; that was followed by sand to ensure traction. Workers will remain on duty as long as temperatures are hovering around the freezing mark.
- Kelli Petras, TxDOT spokeswoman

5:04a The Denton, Azle, Weatherford and Northwest ISDs are all closed today, but we're still waiting for word from Dallas, Fort Worth and other large districts.
- WFAA-TV

5:03a We've spotted an accident on Interstate 35E north of the Lewisville Lake bridge in Corinth. We see emergency lights but there are no reports of injuries. We do see motorists starting to slow down on overpasses, a sign that roads may be icing up.
- Troy Bush, HD Chopper 8 pilot

4:57a Traffic on Interstate 35E is running at posted speeds; in fact, I clocked one trucker barreling down the highway at 80 mph.
- Troy Bush, HD Chopper 8 pilot

4:32a All roads and highways are reported to be passable; sand trucks are out in force. Commuters are advised to give themselves extra time to get to work or school. There are major delays and lots of snow near the University of North Texas. We're watching the northern and western counties closely for reports of icing.
- Alexa Conomos, News 8 Traffic

4:30a No more snowfall is expected to the north and west of Dallas-Fort Worth, but DopplerNet radar shows a large band of snow stretching south from the Red River all the way to Waco. Some locations could see an additional 3 inches of snow this morning. A band of heavy, wet snow moved through downtown Dallas in the past hour headed toward Rockwall and the east.
- Meteorologist Greg Fields

4:09a Most flights are on time at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, but there are hundreds of stranded passengers to accomodate as the day begins. Many of them spent the night in airport terminals on cots, in chairs and even on the floor. "I like Texas; I love Dallas; but, geez, not in an airport," one stranded passenger told us. Some 500 departures were canceled on Thursday. The airport expects at least 60 departure cancellations Friday morning due to weather conditions and because some aircraft is out of place because of the conditions on Thursday.
- Monika Diaz at D/FW Airport

4:06a There's been no new precipitation in Weatherford, but the main concern here is going to be ice as wet roads refreeze. Interstate 20 between Fort Worth and here was clear; not much water or slush on the road surface. But it could be a different situation on side streets, where traffic hasn't been intense enough to keep the road surface clear.
- Johnathan Betz in Parker County

4:05a There's blowing snow at the High Five interchange at North Central Expressway and LBJ Freeway. Sanding trucks are out in force.
- Gary Reaves in North Dallas

4:01a A fresh band of snow is picking up in intensity in some locations as it moves across the region. There could be 1 to 2 inches of additional accumulation.
- Meteorologist Greg Fields

THURSDAY

10:44p UNT classes on the Denton and Dallas campus have been canceled Friday.
- Mark Wright, UNT

10:01p The snow and rain has all moved out. There is nothing more in the forecast than a few snow flurries overnight. We are now watching storm number two. The core of that storm has run into some stable areas and some dry air, which has led to that storm just falling apart. Around daybreak tomorrow, there will be no additional snow in the forecast. But, temperatures are going to drop to freezing or colder.
- Chief Meteorologist Pete Delkus

9:19 The final leg of my journey home tonight was westbound on Eldorado Parkway from the Dallas North Tollway to Little Elm, in eastern Denton County. Eldorado was wet (and slushy in some spots), but I didn't detect any slippery spots. That could all change in the morning, though, if the temperature drops below freezing. Snow is everywhere; neighborhood rooftops look like they've been frosted with white icing. The most mundane trees and bushes glisten unexpectedly in the street lights and headlights. I see one completed snowman a couple of doors down the street from my house (and several failed attempts). The only thing to put a damper on this festive March evening happened when I drove past the neighborhood gas station. The price of a gallon of regular unleaded has rocketed to $3.14.
- Walt Zwirko, WFAA.com

8:31p An uneventful ride north on the Tollway from LBJ Freeway to Eldorado Parkway in Frisco. Traffic is light. Started to notice snow along the shoulders near the Bush Turnpike interchange. Sand trucks are parked and ready to toll at several entrances, but I didn't see any in action. A light mist develops north of Highway 121; the road surface gets more wet, but still not slick. Cars were backed up at the Tollway's Main Street exit, apparently on their way to Pizza Hut Park for an international soccer match.
- Walt Zwirko, WFAA.com

8:10p The significant weather precipitation subsided at D/FW Airport, but crews are still monitoring the weather, runways and roadways for any signs of freezing. American Airlines canceled all evening flights. There were about 500 departure cancellations out of the 950 scheduled departures. Another 60 flights scheduled for Friday morning were also cancelled. D/FW will keep its retail and restaurant outlets open until 4 a.m. to accommodate stranded passengers.
- D/FW Airport

7:59pThe Winter Storm Warning has been canceled. The heavy snow has pushed east of the warning area and is no longer considered a threat. Light snows and flurries are expected to continue during the overnight hours and into Friday morning
- The National Weather Service

7:46p Headed toward Frisco on the Dallas North Tollway, traffic in both directions is moving at the posted speed limit between downtown and LBJ Freeway. Road surfaces are wet but not slick.
- Walt Zwirko, WFAA.com

6:27p The rain is in the process of moving right now. Everything has moved east of Dallas, and it will continue to slide off to the east. Temperatures are cold, and will continue to drop a few degrees as we head into the night. It is 36 degrees at D/FW and 34 degrees in Dallas.
- Chief Meteorologist Pete Delkus

6:26p I'm driving east on U.S. 380 in a fairly rural area between Decatur and Denton, and some motorists are having trouble finding gasoline. I have passed several service stations in the area that are closed, creating a desperate situation for some drivers running low on fuel.
- Mobile journalist Aaron Chimbel in Denton County

6:03p Reports at D-FW Airport say at least eight flights have spent the afternoon stranded on the tarmac. At least one flight carrying around 50 passengers sat on the tarmac for about five hours. News 8 has learned that crews have inspected the runways, and planes are now taking off. "We have a lady who needs to get to a funeral," said Chad Randolph, one of the stranded passengers on the plane, via a phone. "We've got another passenger who is pregnant, needs to get off the plane." American Eagle says it is now bringing those eight planes back to the terminal. For the planes that can't actually get to the gate, the stairs have been pulled out, and passengers are being transported back by a bus.
- Jason Whitely at D/FW Airport

5:55p D-FW has officially picked up one inch of snow. In Cooke County, there has been seven to nine inches of snow. The city of Dallas didn't see a flake. It's just been rain. Everyone, especially those east of Dallas, will start seeing an end to the storm in the next several hours. While it's now dry in Dallas County, there is still some snow falling in Hunt County and rain falling in Kaufman and Ellis counties. There is still another band of snow in our forecast overnight. Round number two is in the Panhandle and far West Texas. I believe this second batch will stay to the south of us. If we get anything, there might be a few flurries during rush hour Friday. My concern is as temperatures drop off tonight, bridges and overpasses are going to freeze. I believe that will cause some problems.
- Chief Meteorologist Pete Delkus

5:24p There's a big soccer match between Mexico's Olympic team and Finland's national team at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco tonight — and it's still scheduled to go on. A message on the facility's Web site urges all fans to "dress appropriately."
- Steve Stoler in Frisco

5:16pThe Northwest ISD in Tarrant County has a phone an e-mail system that alerted parents to an early dismissal because of the winter storm today; but some parents we found weren't able to find their students. "I drove by and I didn't see them standing out there," said Suzanne Abna — who eventually did find her son. For students (and parents) who want to know if there will be a snow day on Friday, be aware that most districts won't make that decision until the early morning hours. You can check WFAA.com and Channel 8 for up-to-the-minute listings.
- Janet St. James in Fort Worth

5:14p Highway 380 in Wise County is jammed in both directions; the road surface is covered with slush — and cars.
- Mobile Journalist Aaron Chimbel in Wise County

5:14p The area of rain and snow is picking up speed, which means it will be coming to an end faster than earlier expected. Additional snow accumulations are now expected to be less than 1 to 2 inches.
- Meteorologist Steve McCauley

5:03p About 50 passengers aboard an American Eagle flight from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport to Houston never got off the ground. At this hour, they're still sitting on board the prop jet — more than five hours after they boarded. "They can't find us a a gate," passenger Chad Randolph told Channel 8 via his cell phone. "It's a little bit comical." It's not funny to some passengers, though, including a woman who is pregnant. An airline official confirms that controllers are still trying to find a place for the prop jet to return to the terminal, although Randoph said he could clearly see several open spots from the windows of the aircraft.
- Jason Whitely at D/FW Airport

5:00p This big winter storm is trying to wind down. I expect that it will move to the east through Dallas County within 90 minutes, with another band or precipitation headed our way later tonight. There's still moderate to heavy snow in parts of Collin County; the snow is now tapering off in Denton County. It's been strictly a rain event so far in central Dallas County. Here are some fresh snow totals:

• Lake Kiowa: 9 inches
• Decatur: 9 inches
• Sanger: 8 inches
• Boonsville: 7.5 inches
• Springtown: 7 inches
• Denison: 7 inches
• Gainesville: 5 inches
• Sherman: 5 inches
• Denton: 4 inches
• Graford: 4 inches
• Roanoke: 3 inches

The snow should be a memory by the weekend; Sunday's high will be 60 degrees. There is rain in the forecast for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, but temperatures will be well above freezing.
- Chief Meteorologist Pete Delkus

4:45p The Dr Pepper Ballpark in Frisco is a beautiful sight to see with a coating of fresh, heavy snow. We've seen a variety of weather conditions: first it snowed; then there was sleet, which caused the roads to become icy; then it started raining again, melting the ice; and then came the snow — a very wet, slushy snow. Plano city road crews say they are working in a grid pattern to keep streets sanded.
- Steve Stoler in Frisco

4:37p There are very few cars on the streets of Denton, which has been hit hard by the winter storm. Youngsters who got out of school early enjoyed the rare treat of having a snowball fight!
- Gary Reaves in Denton

4:33p Rain is turning to freezing rain here at the High Five interchange at North Central Expressway and LBJ Freeway. Traffic is still moving smoothly, but that could deteriorate rapidly as temperatures drop and precipitation continues to fall.
- Bob Greene in North Dallas,

4:27p Traffic is bumper-to-bumper on the highway between Bridgeport and Decatur in Wise County. The roads seem to be getting worse, even though it's not snowing right now — it's raining. There's still slush on the road.
- Mobile journalist Aaron Chimbel in Wise County

4:17p Channel 8 has pre-empted today's regularly scheduled broadcast of The Oprah Winfrey Show to bring you live continuing coverage of the winter storm. However, you can watch Oprah in its entirety at 3:10 a.m. Friday morning on WFAA.
- WFAA-TV

4:16p There have been 230 flights canceled at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport this afternoon.
- Jason Whitely at D/FW Airport

4:14p Southwest Airlines has had no cancellations, but there are some flights delayed up to an hour. No flights can take off when ice pellets are falling, and other delays are due to deicing.
- Ashley Rogers, Southwest Airlines spokeswoman

4:05p Expect this snow to stick around for the next four hours. We have some additional snow totals now:

• Gainesville: 5 inches
• Sherman: 5 inches
• Mineral Wells: 4 inches
• Denton: 4 inches

On top of whatever is already on the ground, we expect to see another 2-4 inches in Dallas and 3-5 inches in counties to the east and northeast before midnight.

The storm system should be moving off to the east by 6 a.m. Friday, but not before leaving us with a very messy rush hour.
- Chief Meteorologist Pete Delkus

3:53p It's a whiteout here in northern Tarrant County, where the snow is now a couple of inches deep — enough to make snowballs! The snow is sticking to highways, bridges, everything. On the drive to this location, our vehicle was fishtailing even though we were being careful and going slowly. We saw a lot of spinouts, no major accidents on Interstate 35W. Workers are being encouraged to go home early if possible, because it's only going to get worse as the hours wear on.
- Johnathan Betz in northern Tarrant County

3:40p We have a very dynamic system with strong bands of precipitation moving through North Texas; you may even hear something called "thundersnow." Snowfall is heavy to moderate over Denton and Collin counties, with some huge, fat, wet flakes of snow reported in Collin County. You can expect this band to continue for the next 4 to 6 hours — then another band now in West Texas will move across our area. Some of the snow totals in the Channel 8 viewing area include:

• Lake Kiowa: 9 inches
• Springtown: 7 inches
• Denison: 7 inches
• Decatur: 5 inches

It's a possibility (but not very likely) that there could be some places that get a foot of snow!
- Chief Meteorologist Pete Delkus

3:32p Snow is starting to fall in downtown Fort Worth. There's no buildup of ice on streets or sidewalks.
- Jim Douglas reporting from Fort Worth

3:24p The situation in Denton County is deteriorating very quickly. The biggest problem areas include side streets, residential areas and Farm-to-Market roads. Hilly areas are particularly treacharous as icy conditions prevail. We recommend that anyone who works outside the county try to stay at work or with friends or family; the commute to Denton County will be slow and treacherous.
- Jody Gonzalez, Denton County Emergency Management

3:22p The snow is making things beautiful in Denton, but the wintry weather is causing problems. It took us about two hours to travel from Dallas to Denton on Interstate 35E. Even the service roads are choked along the highway. We saw people getting stuck in ditches and drivers who found their windshield wipers frozen stuck. Denton ISD and the University of North Texas shut down classes early. There are 15 trailers filled with sand ready to go.
- Rebecca Lopez reporting from Denton

3:12pm Thousands of travelers are already stranded at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, where a few flights are still boarding, but at least 200 outgoing flights have been canceled. American Airlines, the biggest carrier at the airport, said it has canceled 165 departing flights and about the same number of incoming flights. American said it has about seven deicing crews working to get flights off the ground. D/FW has 10 sand trucks working to keep roadways and runways clear. Restaurants have been asked to stay open late until at least midnight to service stranded passengers.
- Jason Whitely at D/FW Airport

3:09p Texas Department of Transportation street crews are poised to attack icy roads and bridges — but they can't start work until the rain stops falling.
- Chris Hawes reporting from Fort Worth

2:45p Snow is just now starting to fall in downtown Fort Worth. It's still all rain in Dallas County, but moderate snow is now falling in Frisco, where the temperature has fallen to 30 degrees. The snow will reach McKinney in the next 30 minutes. Rain and sleet is falling in Plano at Coit Road and the Bush Turnpike, but that is now transitioning to snow. And when the snow stops falling tonight, be prepared for a second band of snow to follow before morning.
- WFAA-TV Chief Meteorologist Pete Delkus

2:43p A viewer called to say a number of cars are stranded on FM 730 north of Azle. He said cars are unable to negotiate the incline over Knob Hill.
- WFAA-TV

WFAA.com
Roads in Denton County near Aubrey were quickly being covered with snow at midafternoon.

2:31p Plano ISD is canceling all after school and evening activities today due to inclement weather.
- Nancy Long, Plano ISD spokeswoman

2:25p A News 8 viewer, Jennifer Swanzy, called to say she stuck a ruler in the snow and it was as deep as seven inches in Boonsville, which is 20 miles southwest of Decatur in Wise County.
- WFAA.com

2:22p Rain and sleet in Highland Village turned to snow about 15 minutes ago; there are big, large flakes.
- Sue Yost, WFAA-TV viewer

2:20p Snow is starting to pile up in parts of the Channel 8 viewing area. There are 4 inches on the ground at the Mineral Wells post office; 3 inches reported in Graford; and close to 2 inches in parts of Denton County. The trnsition is starting from rain to snow in Collin County, but precipitation in downtown Fort Worth and Dallas is still rain. More than 200 flights have been canceled at D/FW Airport as operations are slowed to accomodate de-icing of aircraft.
- Pete Delkus, WFAA-TV Chief Meterorologist

2:16p The University of North Texas Dallas Campus town hall meeting on the renaming of Houston School Road, scheduled 6 p.m. today in Room 304, has been canceled due to inclement weather. The UNT Dallas Campus will close at 2 p.m. today, as will all UNT facilities. The UNT Dallas Campus will reschedule the community meeting for a later date.
- Greg Tomlin, UNT spokesman

2:02p Lewisville Independent School District has canceled all activities tonight. This affects all after school activities, including Extended School Day (ESD) programs.
- LISD Flash Points

1:55p The snow is falling in Denton County. Reports of accumulation in Denton have been coming in. We're also getting reports in Cooke County, Grayson County and in some parts of northwestern Fannin County. Several inches of snow is in Wise and Parker counties. Three to four inches of snow is in Palo Pinto County. In Tarrant County, the transition to rain to snow is trying to occur from downtown Fort Worth to areas to the west. West of downtown, in Azle and Benbrook, we do have snow and sleet falling at this hour.
- Pete Delkus, WFAA-TV Chief Meteorologist

1:41p Sleet and rain is falling in Dallas County.
- Pete Delkus, WFAA-TV Chief Meteorologist

1:28p The winter storm warning does not cover Johnson or Ellis counties, but accumulating sleet is possible there, too. By 9 o'clock tonight, almost all of the Dallas-Fort Worth area will have transitioned to snowfall.
- Pete Delkus, WFAA-TV Chief Meteorologist

1:28p The University of North Texas will close at 2 p.m. today due to deteriorating weather conditions. As of 2 p.m., classes are cancelled and UNT offices and libraries will close. WebCT classes and online testing will continue as scheduled. The UNT Shuttle Service will continue to operate until 2:30 p.m. today. The UNT Dallas Campus also will close at 2 p.m. today. The Universities Center at Dallas and the UNT Health Science Center at Fort Worth, however, make their own closure decisions and are not included in this closure announcement.
- Mark Wright, UNT spokesman

1:17p We're getting reports of sleet mixed in with rain in Collin County. There's a covering of snow in Denton County, and snow is starging to fall in parts of Tarrant County. We will all see the transition to snow as the afternoon goes on.
- Pete Delkus, WFAA-TV Chief Meteorologist

1:15p All after school events in the Dallas ISD have been canceled. That includes Thursday afternoon district athletic events and parent academies.
- Jon Dahlander, DISD spokesman

1:07p Dallas street crews will go to "Ice Force One" at 5 o'clock this afternoon. About 30 trucks are loaded with sand and salt and will be ready to respond to calls. Another shift will replace those crews at midnight.
- WFAA-TV staff

12:51p Winter weather has forced the Fort Worth ISD to cancel athletic events scheduled for Thursday afternoon and evening.
