A University of North Texas student joined the crowded race for Denton mayor Tuesday, calling himself a voice for younger voters.

"I feel like, because of my age, I have a different viewpoint," said Darac Jason Favre, 20. "I want to give everyone a different choice."

Favre, a swimming pool technician, is the fourth candidate seeking the mayor's seat so far. Candidates can continue filing for the position through March 10.

The election is May 10.

Incumbent Mayor Perry McNeill, entrepreneur Justin Bell and lawyer Mark Burroughs filed Monday for spots on the ballot.

Favre, a political newcomer, said his campaign would focus on environmental reforms, downtown revitalization, litter abatement and maintenance of adequate infrastructure, among other issues.

"Since Denton's growing as fast as it is, that [infrastructure] is pretty important," he said.

Favre said he has "kept tabs on" the ongoing Fry Street saga. He even attended some meetings of Save Fry Street, a grassroots organization formed in response to a Houston-area developer's plans to raze a strip of businesses across the street from the University of North Texas and build new shops and restaurants.

But Favre said he agrees with those who say Fry Street is about an atmosphere, not just buildings.

"I was sad to see the buildings go for their historical importance, but I don't think it will change Fry Street that much," he said.

Favre moved to Denton from Richardson two years ago to attend UNT. He is a junior double majoring in political science and studio art.

The four mayoral candidates vary widely in age, profession and political experience.

Bell, 30, co-owns Bell's Super Lube, which sells lubricants for musical instruments. He received nearly 29 percent of the vote in the 2006 mayoral race, his first run for political office.

Burroughs, 50, is a lawyer and former three-term City Council member.

McNeill, 71, a retired college professor and engineer, is seeking his second two-year term as mayor. Before that, he served five years as a council member.
