Officer Mitch Lee aims his tailgating gun at I-20 traffic.

GRAND PRAIRIE - One officer in Grand Prairie may be the only cop in Texas with a weapon to fight tailgating.

The law requires drivers to stay back far enough to stop safely, which is ruled to be about two seconds apart. For those who get caught any closer than that, a ticket can be issued.

Officer Mitch Lee uses technology similar to a laser gun to do just that. Aim it and its software configures the distance between two cars.

Lee said about 12 percent of wrecks can be blamed on tailgating. And as he pointed out with his "gun," there is a lot of tailgating going on. Around midday above Interstate 20, his tailgating gun found cars driving too closely in every lane.
