Immigration crackdown sends families packing

IRVING - The city of Irving's crackdown on rundown apartments and illegal immigration may be driving some families out of town.

Oscar Alvarado said it is definitely the reason he has decided to pack up and move on.

"I am leaving for another city because they are getting tough," he said.

The controversial climate appears to also be impacting school enrollment. The Irving Independent School District has lost 650 students this fall. If the trend continues, the district could lose close to $2 million in state funding.

Irving's Mayor Herbert Gears said the decline is an unintended consequence of the illegal immigration crackdown and apartment cleanup, but he hopes to see enrollment rebound.

But Alvarado said he believes it is just going to get worse.

"My neighbors are already moving and they are getting ready to take their kids out of school," he said.
