Left out after dark: DART flees Turner Courts neighborhood
03:06 PM CST on Friday, December 7, 2007
Broken street lights. Trash on the sidewalks. Shattered beer bottles at the park.
They are small signs of trouble and reasons people living in Dallas' Turner Courts say they want to turn around their neighborhood -- where even public transportation refuses to go after dark.
"So much happening," says resident Minnie Paige, 78. "The fighting, shooting people and all that."
It's gotten so bad that some residents are trying to spruce up those little quality of life issues that they hope can go a long way.
"I would like street lights, it's very dark out here," says resident Dana Arnick.
Arnick is one several residents banding together for their cause. Their main goal is getting back DART buses, which by day, are in and out of the courts every few minutes.
But after the sun goes down the same problems that plague neighbors has led to DART pulling out altogether.
"This was not an easy decision to make," said DART spokesman Morgan Lyons. "But when you have a situation where operators are being attacked by people throwing rocks and bricks at buses, it's just not a safe environment for anyone."
After dark, the closest stop is down the street in front of a market, residents say it’s not the safest walk.
"Most of the kids and gang bangers are in the front of the building," says resident Linda Ross. "So it's very dangerous for me to come down this street, very dangerous."
The group plans on petitioning the city council in the coming weeks to increase code compliance and help turn around those signs that many feel are holding the neighborhood back.
