Mountain lion terrorizing Collin County neighborhood
10:42 AM CST on Friday, December 7, 2007
Cougar sightings may be rare in Texas, but it appears a mountain lion is roaming a Collin County neighborhood.
Flyers now warn of the danger: A mountain lion sighting on the Allen-Lucas border that's putting families on edge.
"We moved out here for the space and for our daughter so she can have a place to play and go hunt frogs, but now I can't let her out," said resident Jana Zettl.
Thomas Nichol is looking for evidence to prove his eyes didn't deceive him.
"I know exactly what I saw and this was a large cat," Nichol said.
Nichol was trimming trees when he says the mountain lion made its appearance.
"I started moving my vehicle and saw a very large cat being chased by the German Sheppard," he said. "The cat was probably from nose to tail longer than the dog."
Rosie, a dog owned by a nearby neighbor of Nichol's, chased the cougar and forced it up a tree.
"He treed himself and then exited the tree when we got close to him and he ran into the drainage area into the housing area."
So far, no other sightings, but Zettl wonders if the mountain lion is to blame for a few pet mysteries in the area.
"We lost a pet in June and my neighbor lost a pet and the neighbors down the street have lost a pet," Zettl said. "I mean this cat is menace."
So, she's putting out traps to take matters into her own hands.
"I'm not going to be happy until I know it's gone," she said. "I just can't let my daughter out."
