DALLAS — Court documents revealed that a five-month-old girl tested positive for methamphetamines after she was taken from her mother, who was arrested for allegedly shooting a police officer last month.

Police said Marisela Villa, 19, was holding a gun in one hand and her baby, Natalia Sharpless, in the other hand when the altercation happened during an Oct. 17 raid on a Dallas home. Villa allegedly shot Lt. Carlton Marshall in the neck—then used her baby as a shield.

Authorities said they believe her mother was using methamphetamines, and the documents said her child did test positive for the drug. Authorities said they believe the drug was transferred during breast feeding.

Experts say the drug in the baby's system can cause serious brain damage.

"It is infuriating, and I only blame the parents for this problem," said prosecutor Wendy Segall.

According to court documents, Child Protective Service workers have noticed that Natalia "is very easily frightened."

Police say that children rescued from parents using meth are often found in dangerous situations.

"We've actually seen kids stirring pots, mixing it in houses," said CPS spokesman Emilio Mendoza.

One former meth addict admitted that the drug's pull was more powerful than her children's safety while she was using. She was seven months pregnant when she was using meth.

"I thought about putting him up for adoption so I could keep using the drug," the woman said.

Villa has been charged with attempting to kill a police officer; and the police department said they are also considering charges related to the treatment of her child.
