The Minneapolis bridge tragedy has many North Texans concerned about the state of their own bridges and overpasses, and they may have good reason.

News 8 learned from the Texas Department of Transportation that 10 bridges in Dallas County are considered "structurally deficient."

Nationwide, 77,000 bridges, which are scored on a scale of 100, are categorized that way. The 35W bridge in Minneapolis scored a 50.

In Texas, more than 2,100 bridges, which make up four percent of the state's 50,000 bridges, fall into the "structurally deficient" category.

One example is the Houston Street Viaduct in Dallas. It's more than 90-years-old and it's the oldest bridge in Texas. However, TxDOT says just because a bridge is classified "structurally deficient" does not mean it's unsafe.

"These bridges are classified as structurally deficient and they are absolutely safe," said Mark Ball, TxDOT. "What it does mean to us is that they do not meet today's standards. So, we are not alerting the public to stay off those roads because we don't need to. But the truth is, if we were to build those bridges today, they would be built differently. And in fact, we hope some day to refurbish or re-modernize those bridges."

The agency says bridges are inspected every two years and that 77 percent of the bridges are said to be in good condition.

There are also "structurally deficient" bridges in other parts of North Texas.
