Update: Girl will get special hearing aid
12:51 PM CDT on Thursday, July 26, 2007
A little girl born without ears will get a special type of hearing aid after all.
A News 8 report on Tuesday detailed the health insurance crisis surrounding 15-month-old Samantha Collins.
She was born with a condition that affects the growth of her facial bones, and she has no ears as a result.
Samantha's insurance company initially refused to cover the cost of a special hearing aid that would be anchored to the bone where her ears should be.
United Healthcare denied claims four times.
But after re-examining the case, United Healthcare has decided it will pay for the device.
"The family has our apologies, sincerely," said Tyler Mason, a United Healthcare vice-president. "And we wish for Samantha, the best."
