'I kept running,' says truck driver

10:02 PM CDT on Wednesday, July 25, 2007

By CRAIG CIVALE / WFAA-TV

It was supposed to be a routine delivery but Joe Barrientos hardly had a routine.

The GWS driver has been on the job for just two weeks, long enough, though, to recognize the sound of trouble.

"I heard a hissing sound."

It was quickly followed by a man yelling.

"He said there's a fire, when there's a fire, in that place, it's time for you to go," he said.

So he ran. Within seconds he heard explosions, the world around him coming down.

"You could feel the floor trembling explosions going off, tanks going off in the air."

When he finally turned around he saw his truck on fire - in the middle spewing flames.

But no matter how fast he ran, the danger seemed to follow, as canister's flying through the air came crashing to the ground.

"When I seen those cylinders flying up there, I said you never know if you're going get them, so I just kept running."

Barrientos guesses he ran a half a mile before he finally stopped. He was all alone, and as he gazed back at the thick black smoke, he finally had a chance to reflect on how he cheated death.

"It just gave me goose bumps, knowing that I was lucky to get out of there, cause if I had stayed any longer, who knows."
