Valets caught using private driveways for parking
11:18 PM CDT on Wednesday, July 4, 2007
It's hard to find parking on Lower Greenville - there just aren't enough spots.
But some folks are raising a stink because valets are stashing cars in private driveways and they're caught on tape doing it.
Developer Josh LeComte is selling off new town homes, just off Lower Greenville.
But he's got a problem.
"People that are interested in purchasing come by at night - they get scared away."
That's because valet parkers at the nearby Beagle Bar are cramming their cars into his driveways.
"I never gave them permission."
To take care of business he called in "The Dog."
Neighborhood activist Avi Adelman helped LeComte establish a contract with tow truck company.
Then last night, video camera in hand, Adelman documented the problem.
"Last night the valet's had 8 or 12 cars here."
His tape shows the valet parkers using their bodies to block the tow truck from removing the vehicles.
And when a parker insists he has permission, Adelman sets him straight.
"Anybody who parks up there risks the chance of their car being towed and turned into a paper weight," he said.
The valet company says it was a simple misunderstanding.
But to prospective buyers, it looks like bad news.
"They need to be livable, people get a little rattled when valet's parking cars, in front of their unit. In front of their perspective unit," said LeComte.
But in a changing neighborhood, where the interests of nightlife and home life compete, the front lines will continue to be where the rubber meets the road.
"It's getting nastier. Whether this will stop tonight, I don't know," Adelman added.
