Evelyn Frayre, the 8-month-old found hanging by a sweater sleeve from a clothes rod in a makeshift closet next to the bodies of her three sisters and her mother, has been released from Cook Children's Medical Center and placed in temporary foster care.

A hearing is set for June 12 to consider custody.

Her three sisters, ages 5, 3 and 1, and mother, 25-year-old Gilberta Estrada, died early Tuesday in an apparent triple-murder suicide in their in a Hudson Oaks mobile home.

Kimberly Aaron, medical director of the hospital's emergency department, said at a news conference Wednesday that Evelyn arrived at the hospital hungry, alert and crying vigorously. She had some redness around her neck and a ruptured blood vessel on her face, but appeared healthy and well-cared for, Dr. Aaron said.

After being fed, she was rocked to sleep, Dr. Aaron said.

"She awoke and was smiling and playful," she said.

Hospital president Nancy Cychol said relatives, including the baby’s father, had come to the hospital to visit. But the father was barred because of an existing protective order.

Dr. Aaron said staff members had have been calling Evelyn a miracle baby.

Evelyn’s aunt, Alejandra Estrada, went to check on the family when Gilberta Estrada had failed to show up for work Tuesday morning. She entered the home located in the Oak Hill Mobile Home Park just off Interstate 20 and heard gurgling sounds coming from the makeshift closet. She pulled back a sheet serving as a door and discovered the family.

An Estrada Memorial Fund has been established at Wells Fargo and donations can be made at any of its bank branches.
