MESQUITE - A mother spoke out after she said her son was hit by a car while he was supposed to be in the care of his daycare Wednesday.
When Tamara Roberts arrived at Stoneway Private Schools in Mesquite to pick up her 5-year-old son, she said she was shocked to discover that he was nowhere to be found. In fact, no one at the school knew the whereabouts of her son Denarius Roberts.
"Could no one in the daycare tell me the last time they've seen my child," she said.
Officials at the school said the boy disappeared after he had gotten into a fight with another student and ran out of the classroom. Those at the school said they thought he was hiding somewhere in the daycare. In reality, he was wandering alone just off Beltline Road in Mesquite.
It was at that spot, which is about a half a mile from his school, that the boy walked into oncoming traffic and was hit by a truck.
"...My eyes were closed," Denarius said of the moment the truck came towards him.
Denarius was taken to Children's Medical Center in Dallas and suffered a concussion and cuts and bruises to his head, arm and shoulders.
"I'm feeling better," he said from his hospital bed.
However, his mom said it could have ended worse and questions the daycare's lack of action.
"No one had contacted me," she said. "I was not contacted [and the] police were not contacted."
Officials said the boy would remain in the hospital at least overnight. Roberts has hired a lawyer.
