"I thought I was invincible."
Teens teaching teens about safe driving - any way they can.
That's the job at Garland High - only days before spring break.
Getting a message, any message, through to teenagers is a challenge, but organizers of the 'Teen in the Drivers' Seat' program hope their message resonates in Garland because of the recent losses here.
Garland High lost three seniors in an accident last year, just six weeks before graduation.
One of the victims - Shane Petroski.
"It just makes me feel wonderful that these kids care enough, and that it impacted them enough to try to change," said his mother, Eileen.
His mother attended a press conference held Wednesday by Shane's peers at Garland High - to help promote adolescent awareness on the leading cause of death among teens.
Some 6,000 die every year in auto crashes.
"Now imagine loading a commercial jet full of teenagers and having it crash, once every week, for an entire year," said Nelly Shore, chair of the Youth Council.
The top five distractions for teen drivers - according to the state - driving at night, distractions, speeding, no seat belts and alcohol.
"On a positive note, fewer than 6 percent of the students say that they've driven after drinking alcohol," said Shore.
Student leaders from all seven Garland high schools announced their plans to boost student awareness.
They are going check students pulling out of the parking lot are wearing seat-belts.
They are getting the message out - from peer to peer - and from campus to the drivers' seat.
