Texas lawmakers will soon debate whether to change the wording in the pledge to the Texas flag.
One representative wants the phrase to include: "one nation, under God."
The Houston Republican says Texas was founded on Judeo-Christian values and she thinks it's a good thing to recognize that.
Every day, children in Texas public schools honor the American flag.
And then, as required by state law, they say the pledge to the Texas flag.
As the pledge goes, "Honor the Texas flag, pledge allegiance to thee Texas one and indivisible."
But listen closely and there's something missing that's in the pledge to the American flag - one nation, under God.
A Houston representative wants that to change.
"Our nation and our state was founded on Judeo-Christian ethics, Judeo-Christian values and I think it's a good thing to recognized that," said Debbie Riddle.
So Riddle filed a bill to take the Texas pledge and add, "one state under God."
The Texas pledge has been around since 1933, when the legislature approved it.
With the flag flying over Dallas City Hall Plaza, we asked some folks if they even knew of the pledge.
"No! Not with the word Texas in it!" said one passer-by.
"Texas pledge? No!" said another.
The Texas pledge may not be widely known and not all lawmakers think altering the Texas pledge is a good idea.
"I worked for a faith-based organization. I believe in God but I also believe the founding of this country that we don't impose our religion on anybody," said representative Lon Burnam.
But if lawmakers approve the change students will know next fall.
