The Focus was dragged about 150 yards underneath the truck before catching fire, and was covered in sand that poured from a hole in the trailer.

PLANO - updated A McKinney woman died Wednesday morning when her car struck an 18-wheeler, became lodged under the trailer and burst into flames, police said.

The accident occurred just before 7 a.m. at Custer Road and the westbound State Highway 121 service road.

Plano police traffic investigator Andrae Smith said the 18-wheeler, a large dump truck carrying sand, ran a red light on Custer and came into contact with a Ford Focus and a Ford Expedition crossing the intersection on the westbound 121 service road.

The Focus was dragged about 150 yards underneath the truck before catching fire, and was covered in sand that poured from a hole in the trailer.

"We know the Ford Focus struck the dump truck and the cab, and rotated the vehicle and brought it under the truck," Officer Smith said.

The driver of the Expedition was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the dump truck was uninjured, he said.

The Collin County medical examiner was at the scene Wednesday morning, waiting to identify the victim once her body could be removed from the car.

Officer Smith said criminal charges are pending in the accident.

"We know we've got witness statements that tell us the dump truck went through the red light," Smith said.

The accident closed the intersection as well as an on ramp to 121, causing a lengthy traffic backup for morning commuters.
