Cheer coach quits over conflicts with administrators

Michaela Ward says administrators interfered with every attempt to manage her squad.

Ask Michaela Ward and she'll tell you the last nine months have been frustrating. That's why she resigned from the staff at McKinney North High School last week.

"Basically, if they wanted my opinion, they'd give it to me," said Ward, who had been the school's cheer coach.

She said she was undermined and overruled from the time she walked through the doors.

It all started when school administrators let a girl on the team who had not originally made the squad. They did that without asking or even consulting with Ward, she said.

Ward said she tried to meet with the superintendent. "We scheduled a meeting, and he never showed up," she said. "He never even called to cancel. I guess he just decided it wasn't that important."

After that, Ward said, administrators interfered with every attempt to manage her squad.

She wanted to hand out punishments for offenses ranging from girls ditching class, to taking sexually suggestive photos at a Condoms-to-Go store on U.S. 75.

"The central office made a decision as to how they were going to punish the girls, a decision that—again—I was not ever included in," Ward said.

She said these actions were nothing new at McKinney North.

"Last year, when I was hired, I was the fourth person who had stepped in that year alone—and I stepped in February," Ward said.

She said she won't be the last, either, if something does not change. And the ones who will ultimately suffer are the cheerleaders.

When asked to comment on the situation, a spokesperson with McKinney ISD said Michaela Ward left on her own terms, and that that was probably the best decision for both parties involved.
