'Godcasting' puts sermons in the palm of the hand

For those searching for something more spiritual to put on their iPod, church services are now available for download.

Nate Thern will soon be heading to the Mideast to report for military duty.

"I'm leaving on Wednesday and will probably arrive sometime next week over in Quatar," he said.

While he is traveling far away from his family's church, he said he still plans on keeping service sermons in the palm of his hand. Thern said he plans on watching services through downloads called "Godcasting" he places on his iPod.

"It allows me to stay connected," he said.

Lee Raney, of www.Christian.com, co-created Godcasting.

"If they miss a church service, they can catch it later and listen to the service again while they're jogging, in their car, anywhere," he said.

Raney said there are 600 Christian podcasts already online, including one from a McKinney based family worship center.

"We have people that listen literally from all of the US," said Charlie Tuttle, Family Worship Center. "We get emails from Pakistan, the Middle East, just everywhere. It's a way for people to connect with what's going on at Family Worship Center."

While Godcasting is a convenient way to connect with God, Raney said it isn't a substitution for church.

"This certainly should never replace going to a local church," he said. "It's really just an extra way for people to get more of God's word in their life everyday."

It is also a way church members said they can soak in the message even more.

"I'll listen to it a couple of times during the week, go back and listen to part of it," said Bud Johnson. "If there's something that I missed, I'll go and take the notes down."

Godcast subscriptions are free.
