Family inspired to donate bone marrow

So much about Medical City Dallas Hospital—and this day—has Andrew Scott's heart racing. He and his wife Jenny both sense it. Allie, their beloved angel, was just four months old when she was brought to the same facility in 2004 and diagnosed with leukemia. Her mother gave thanks to the many strangers who donated blood. "Those people—they saved my daughter," a tearful Jenny Scott said at the time. But despite an outpouring of love and support from neighbors in North Texas and from around the world, Allie lost her fight. She was nine months old. Today, the Scotts are parents again. Maggie is healthy, but the family has recently been touched by cancer again. Andrew Scott was notified that he is a perfect match for a young boy who needs a bone marrow transplant. So what strangers did for his little girl, he didn't hesitate to give back. "It gives me the opportunity to do something I wasn't able to do for my own daughter," he said. "It feels really special," Surrounded by the same medical team that cared for Allie in her final days, life-giving bone marrow was withdrawn from his hips. It was a poignant moment—especially for Allie's transplant doctor, Dr. Stanton Goldman. "I wish Allie was here to be toddling around the waiting room," he said. In a few short hours, Andrew's stem cells will pump new life into an unidentified nine-year-old boy. "I think Allie has definitely had her hand in this," Jenny Scott said. "I think there is no other way to explain it to us than Allie had to have been a part of that." No one knows better than this family what this selfless gift from a stranger means. The Scotts are only allowed to send an anonymous note of best wishes along with the bone marrow transplant. For now, they must leave unspoken the inspiration forever in their hearts. "If I could've, I would have told them that they had an angel watching over them, and she's going to take care of them," Jenny said. "I really do think that." E-mail jstjames@wfaa.com
