Fort Worth Museum of Science and History

Engineers Week

Engineers Week activities offered by Fort Worth Museum of Science and History introduce guests to wind tunnels, flight simulators, paper airplane challenges

Lockheed Martin, IBM volunteers team up to help families explore engineering through hands-on adventures, February 17-23

The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History will team up with engineers from Lockheed Martin and IBM this month to introduce guests to engineering concepts through a series of fun-filled Engineers Week activities.

Starting Sunday, February 17, guests who visit the Museum's exhibits on the lower level of the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame can wrap their brains around engineering concepts by putting their hands to work with real engineering projects. A team of volunteers from Lockheed Martin and IBM will work with guests to explain the principles of flight, demonstrate aerodynamics, and offer advice to budding architects.

Museum guests can watch fascinating demonstrations, ask questions or simply play and explore in areas that will include:

Structure building with KEVA® planks

Paper airplane challenges

F-35 computer flight simulator

Vertical wind tunnel activities

Electrolysis investigation

Fun with Lego® Mindstorms® and more

Lockheed Martin and IBM professionals will be on hand to work with Museum guests on Sunday, February 17, from 2 to 5 p.m. and on Saturday, February 23, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The volunteers will also work with pre-booked school groups from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Engineers Week activities are free with admission to the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame, the temporary home of Fort Worth Museum of Science and History exhibits, including ExploraZone, Hands on Studio, and KIDSPACE, as well as its own collection of interactive galleries that reveal the extraordinary courage and the pioneer spirit of the great women of the American West.

Engineers Week, a formal coalition of more than 70 engineering, education and cultural societies, and more than 50 corporations and government agencies, is dedicated to raising public awareness of engineers' positive contributions to our quality of life. Engineers Week promotes recognition among parents, teachers and students of the importance of a technical education and a high level of math, science and technology literacy, and motivates young people to pursue engineering careers. Engineers Week was founded in the United States in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers. For more information, visit www.eweek.org.

“Coaching” Kids in Reducing Childhood Obesity
The Cooper Institute to Donate FITNESSGRAM to 40 Diverse Private Schools and After-School Programs

In support of reducing childhood obesity among diverse children, Olympic gold medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee will be in Dallas for The Cooper Institute, an education/research non-profit at Cooper Aerobics Center, to announce a donation of the FITNESSGRAM® physical fitness assessment program to more than 40 private and faith-based schools and school-based programs in east, west and south Dallas.

This donation from local benefactors will make it possible for students of 40+ local private schools and programs to benefit from the physical fitness testing that public and charter school students will this year. FITNESSGRAM was recently named the statewide assessment tool by the Texas Education Agency. Senate Bill 530 requires that more than 4 million public and charter school students, grades 3 through 12, be tested by the FITNESSGRAM on their physical fitness in the spring, however, there is no provision mandating the testing for private schools.

ABOUT FITNESSGRAM:
FITNESSGRAM tests measure aerobic capacity, body composition, muscular strength, endurance and flexibility. Data shows that students who were able to achieve a “healthy fitness zone” in at least 5 out of 6 tests scored higher academically and had fewer discipline problems in school. http://www.cooperinst.org/products/grams/index.cfm or http://www.jackiejoyner-kerseefoundation.org/index.htm

THE FACTS ON CHILDHOOD OBESITY:

According to a recent Trust for America’s Health report, Texas ranks 12th among all states for obesity and overweight populations.

In Texas, a 2007 Comptroller report showed that nearly two-thirds of the state’s adults are overweight or obese. It also showed that 42 percent of the state’s 4th graders, 39 percent of 8th graders and 36 percent of 11th graders were overweight or at risk of being overweight.

It has been predicted that for every child born after the year 2000, one out of three Caucasians, one out of two Hispanics, and two out of five African Americans will become diabetic.

Home Care Physicians

"We make house calls to the elderly."  Basically, Medicare will allow a patient to receive a house call if there is a medical need.  Medicare has realized that with baby boomers becoming older, it would be more viable for them to obtain a house call than to go to the emergency room or a quick clinic.  House calls will save time, energy, and money for the patient and the family.

Home Care Physicians provides primary care, nursing care, physical therapy, podiatry, x-rays, EKG, lab work, pulse oximetry, and vaccinations, all at the patient's bedside. Most conditions that we treat include diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disease, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, and wound care. Basically, you get an idea of what type of environment or situation the patient lives in. For example, if a patient is diabetic, when you walk into the home, you can tell if they are eating properly, if they are complying with the diet. If they have high blood pressure, you can assess anxiety or stress level. Are they keeping great grandchildren and not taking care of themselves? With my patients who have shortness of breath or COPD asthmatic, I can usually tell if someone has been smoking in the home or do they have pets that could be causing this.

Home visits are covered by Medicare Part B and some private insurance. Home Care Physician services are typically one fifth the cost of a visit to the emergency room without labs or any type of testing.     "In-Home Hospital," is a concept where patients can obtain treatment for acute illnesses in their home. Most of these illnesses normally require a two to three day visit in a hospital.  The "In-Home Hospital" team consists of an RN, drug-infusion company, x-ray imaging personnel, phlebotomy services, from the home care agency and the referring specialist. The patient is seen on a daily basis by a practitioner and twice daily by an RN. Conditions that we normally treat with this "In-Home Hospital Concept" are infections such as pneumonia, urinary tract infection,  prostatitis, and soft tissue infection. Next, we can do chemotherapy for patients who have cancer. We can do Dobutamine induction for patients with cardiomyopathy or weak heart.  We do intravenous fluid replacement for patients with dehydration. We can give IV pain medication for patients with acute pain conditions such as acute fractures, neuropathy, and fibromyalgia.  Lastly, for patients that have malnutrition or esophageal problems, we can do nutritional support through an IV. Our Practitioners go to adult day care centers and see patients while their families are at work. Also, we make visits to various assisted living and group homes in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.

“Not So Perfect Parent”

To increase the adoption of older children living in orphanages around the globe, the Gladney Center for Adoption created the Bright Futures camp.  Children from Ethiopia and Russia will be participating in these camps and will have the opportunity to enjoy many fun-filled activities.  Gladney is looking for families who are willing to open their hearts and homes to these children.  For many of these children, this once in a life-time experience could be their only opportunity to find a forever family.

A representative from Gladney's Bright Futures camp will be in-studio to discuss this exciting event.  In addition, a family who has adopted through the Bright Futures camp will share their personal experience.
