Slumdog Millionaire is a brilliant, Oscar-contending film that takes place on the streets of India.

Jamal grows up homeless and his streetwise survival skills take him all the way to a popular television game show as a smart young adult. On television Jamal becomes a national sensation.

As Jamal moves up the millionaire ladder, you also find out he is in love with a girl from the slums named Latika. Their difficult, dangerous lives are intertwined so deeply that you can't help but hope they might reunite.

One problem: Everything and everyone is working against them.

Slumdog Millionaire is directed by one of the best, Danny Boyle, who directed Trainspotting, 28 Days Later and Millions . This is his finest film — emotionally charged and complicated, but ultimately beautiful and hopeful.

Slumdog Millionaire is rated R and is at times difficult to watch. It's also one of the finest films of 2008, a rare movie of delicate power and substance, with a large dose of hope.
