Video Games Forever

We've all heard about gloomy holiday sales for America's retailers, but there does appear to be at least one bright spot.

New figures from the NPD Group show we're spending those precious discretionary dollars on video games and consoles, with sales up 10 percent in November.

Leading the way: Nintendo's Wii, with more than two million sold last month alone — more than double the number of rival Microsoft Xbox.

"Video games represent a place where consumers are voting with their dollars, that they provide great value," said Nintendo of America president and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. "Our industry so far through November is up about 22 percent."

Fils-Aime said Nintendo products represent more than 80 percent of the overall growth since 2007.

He confidently predicted that Wii will reign supreme for an unprecedented fourth straight year next holiday season.

"We also have a new handheld that will be launched sometime during the course of the next year called the Nintendo DSi," Fils-Aime said.

The DSi, an update to the current DS portable gaming system, will come equipped with two cameras, an SD memory card slot, and bigger screens.

"It's a product that's already been launched in Japan and is doing quite well," he said. "We'll bring it out to the U.S. marketplace sometime in the 2009 calendar year."
