South Oak Cliff principal resigns after investigation

DALLAS -- News 8's investigation last fall raised questions about the eligibility of one of the star players on the 2006 state championship basketball team.
School transcripts and class transfer records obtained by News 8 documented how the athlete missed several days of classes, leading to a failing grade, and then a transfer out of the class, approved by his head coach James Mays.
Mays says he was only following instructions.
The sequence of events culminated in the changing of the student's grade at the request of then principal Donald Moten. The student went on to help his team win the state title.
Moten repeatedly declined to answer our questions about the grade changing allegations and the ineligibility of the student athlete.
This past January, following our investigation and a DISD internal investigation, the Superintendent Michael Hinojosa stripped the team of it's title.
No adult had been punished, until now.
DISD officials have confirmed Moten, now an assistant principal at Jackson Elementary, has resigned after being notified of recent findings by internal investigators.
News 8 has also learned that some of those findings may have criminal implications and are being referred to the Dallas County District Attorney's office for possible prosecution.
We were unable to reach Moten for a comment. DISD officials say the investigation into the cheating scandal continues.
