Jesuit golfer falls in semifinals of U.S. Junior Amateur

SHOAL CREEK, Ala. – Another of Tiger Woods' records is safe for one more year.

Evan Beck, of Virginia Beach, Va., beat Dallas' Jordan Spieth, 1 up in one of the semifinals of the U.S. Junior Amateur on Friday, keeping the 14-year-old Jesuit sophomore from a chance to pass Woods as youngest champion.

Woods was 15 when he won the first of three straight junior titles in 1991.

Beck was 4 up after eight holes. Spieth was able to whittle the margin to one with long birdie putts on Nos. 14 and 15 but could not get any closer.

Beck will face 17-year-old Cameron Peck, of Olympia, Wash., in today's 36-hole final.

Spieth never trailed in his morning quarterfinal against Andrew Yun and held a 4-up lead after nine holes.

"I almost let him back in it," said Spieth, who went on to win, 3 and 2. "I was fortunate that he didn't have enough holes left. I knew he would make a charge."
