Dallas golfer wins Texas State Open

TYLER – Dallas' Martin Piller hardly looked like he was playing his first event as a pro. During Sunday's final round of the Texas State Open, he never lost his lead or his composure.

Piller overcame the pressure with a 4-under 66 at The Cascades. He was never seriously threatened, finishing with a two-stroke victory over Shawn Stefani of Baytown and Dawie Van Der Walt of Beaumont.

Dallas' Ryan Posey shot 66 to tie for fourth, four shots back, with Mission's Dustin Garza, the low amateur.

After accepting the trophy and the placard check for $25,000, Piller finally showed some uncertainty when he approached Darrell Crall, executive director for the Northern Texas PGA.

"Can you tell me how I get the real money?" Piller said. "I've never done this."

Piller, 22, turned pro just before the event. He had played four years at Texas A&M and will graduate this summer.

Piller experienced practically everything else over 72 holes. He made four eagles, including a hole-in-one in the second round, 15 birdies and nine bogeys. He averaged 66.5 strokes with rounds of 69-64-67-66.

Starting the final round with a one-shot lead, Piller went out aggressively. He birdied Nos. 2 and 4 then chipped in for eagle on 6. His only bogeys came when he failed to get up and down from bunkers on 9 and 11.

When he eagled the par-5 14th for the second straight day, Piller was in full control.

"Coming into today, I'd be lying if I said there was no doubt," Piller said. "I was anxious at first, but I got off to a good start."

Course draws raves: The Texas State Open will return to The Cascades next year. The Northern Texas PGA is searching for a title sponsor with the hope of keeping the tournament there longer.

Players raved about the course, particularly the greens.

"The Cascades is our little Augusta National," NTPGA executive director Darrell Crall said. "The golf course provides championship conditions."

Briefly: Richardson amateur Kevin Schultz made the fourth hole-in-one of the tournament, using a 7-iron from 165 yards on No. 5. His 68 put him in a tie for 43rd. His brother David tied for 13th after a final-round 71 that included one birdie, on 18. ... Amateur Bobby Massa of Grand Prairie tied for 22nd. His brother Cody, an assistant pro at The Cascades, tied for 37th.
