OU women take down Texas
11:54 PM CST on Monday, February 12, 2007
NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma women's coach Sherri Coale is loyal to her veterans – almost to a fault. But Coale shook things up Monday, and it may have altered the Sooners' fortunes.
Instead of sticking with her seniors, Coale started two freshmen, guard Jenna Plumley and forward Amanda Thompson. They rewarded the coach with double-digit scoring performances as No. 14 Oklahoma looked pretty in pink en route to a 78-58 win over Texas.
"If we played like that earlier, I think we'd still be undefeated in the Big 12," said Oklahoma's Courtney Paris, who demanded her team play with more energy after Saturday's loss at Texas A&M.
The 11,245 fans inside Lloyd Noble Center all wore pink shirts to promote breast cancer awareness. Coale, who wore pink Converse tennis shoes, raced up the tunnel in excitement at halftime after watching the Sooners (19-4, 9-3 Big 12) build a 48-22 lead.
Plumley had three of her five steals in the first half and was 3-for-6 from 3-point range. Thompson had six points, four rebounds and four assists in the first half. Both players simply made things happen as Oklahoma went on 6-0, 14-0 and 7-0 runs.
Plumley's 11 points, eight assists and five steals were seemingly more important than Paris' 27 points and 15 boards. The 5-4 energizer from Red Rock, Okla., appears to be Oklahoma's starting point guard for the foreseeable future.
Oklahoma's other point guards supported Plumley from the bench, Coale said. Senior Kendra Moore had one assist in seven minutes. Senior Britney Brown did not play (coach's decision).
Plumley, who logged 33 minutes, was unavailable for comment afterward because of a family emergency.
"I like her little freshman swagger as much as anything. I really do," Coale said. "When she comes out there on the floor, she just looks like she believes she can do whatever she wants to do. I think that infuses the rest of the team."
The Longhorns (16-10) left town battered and bruised. They shot 30 percent from the floor, got beat on the boards (47-33) and fell to 5-7 in Big 12 play. Texas' NCAA Tournament chances are now in serious peril. And senior Tiffany Jackson (19 points, six rebounds) had to get stitches afterward for a busted lip.
Jody Conradt's redshirt freshmen took too many quick shots, which left them vulnerable in the transition game. Earnesia Williams went 4-for-14 from the floor, and Carla Cortijo was 0-for-5.
"When you take quick shots, you're not going to have floor balance, and you're going to put pressure on your defense," Conradt said. "That's where our youth hurts us as much as anything."
