World Cup starter: Not-so-sweet 16
Enough of this namby-pamby group play. Who's got the stomach for elimination soccer? Sixteen teams start punching one another out with two matches over each of the next four days. FIFA World Cup Starter |
Moments | Global spin
Round of 16 (.pdf) Friday's results: More soccer The hosts are up first as they take on Sweden in Munich. Jürgen Klinsmann's Germans were stretched only once in group play, when they needed all 90 minutes to push one past Poland. The Swedes finished a tight little march through group play with a draw against England. Henrik Larsson, with his history of providing the telling goal, found the late-game equalizer. At 34, and with just three days' rest, can he have much left in the tank? Tourney leading scorer Miroslav Klose, on the other hand, seems to have another one or two goals in him, especially when a huge Allianz-Arena crowd gets its Deutsch "loud" on. The Mexicans fought hard against Portugal in the group play finale. But they fell short, finished numero dos and now face a tough assignment against surging, well-rested Argentina in Leipzig. The Mexican midfield needs its A-plus game, because Juan Riquelme and Esteban Cambiasso are the sharp end of a mighty dangerous Argentine midfield stick.
