Texan Dempsey will be on World stage
International exposure may lead to an increase in value
Maybe you've seen the Nike commercial in which Clint Dempsey salutes the crowd after a goal. Or you caught the U.S. men's national soccer team's appearance on Good Morning America last week, when Dempsey scored on the weatherman. The 2006 FIFA World Cup, which begins Friday in Germany, provides Dempsey and other up-and-coming U.S. stars the chance at invaluable exposure in this country and beyond. FIFA World Cup Finals Quite a trip for Clint Dempsey Dempsey video (from Google.com) It's uncertain how much playing time Dempsey, a midfielder, will get. He's not expected to start, but some soccer experts have labeled him the most likely breakout star of the World Cup. "The World Cup presents a huge opportunity for him," said Dan Segal, Dempsey's agent. Dempsey will make a reported $86,000 this year playing for Major League Soccer's New England Revolution. He'll make more than that playing for the national team, Segal said. And Dempsey has a long-term deal with Nike that lasts through 2010. If Dempsey makes a strong impression at the World Cup, more endorsement deals may follow. Success would also increase his value when his contract with the Revolution runs out in 18 months. The World Cup is also a place where Dempsey can prove himself to interested European clubs, whose contracts dwarf typical MLS salaries. E-mail khairopoulos@dallasnews.com
