FC Dallas' Cunningham quick to make impact
12:13 AM CDT on Thursday, August 21, 2008
FRISCO – Jeff Cunningham, the newest member of FC Dallas' strike force, had little difficulty adjusting to his new team. It helps when you have Kenny Cooper as a teammate.
"All defenders in the league mark him," Cunningham said. "So that makes it easier for me."
Cunningham imagined he would need to fight to earn his spot in the lineup. Which is why he was surprised when coach Schellas Hyndman made him a starter for FC Dallas' first game since his arrival two weeks ago.
Cooper, the team's top striker, said he wasn't surprised.
"Schellas has brought in quality players since he's been here," Cooper said. "Jeff Cunningham's statistics speak for themselves. He's scored so many goals in the league."
Cunningham scored the only goal in Saturday's 2-1 loss at Columbus. It was his 100th MLS goal, and he had other opportunities.
Columbus defender Chad Marshal cleared a header by Cunningham off the line, and goalkeeper William Hermer spoiled a one-on-one against the player near the penalty kick dot.
"I wanted to chip it but didn't make it in time," Cunningham said.
Ricardinho returns to Brazil: FC Dallas released forward Ricardinho, the club announced Wednesday.
Cunningham's arrival was a factor in the decision, Hyndman said. An international roster spot became available with the release.
Ricardinho, who returns to Brazilian club Atletico Paranaense, logged seven matches, one as a starter, and averaged 20 minutes per game this season.
The Brazilian forward arrived on loan from Paranaense in July 2007, and the deal was originally due to expire at the end of this season. He flew to Curitiba, Brazil, Wednesday night.
"We wanted to make our relationship with Atletico Paranaense a two-way street," Hyndman said.
Midfielder to be recognized: Pablo Ricchetti will be honored for his community work at the Dallas Sports Fans Choice Awards, along with Rangers shortstop Michael Young and Mavericks forward Josh Howard. Cooper will also be recognized at Thursday's event.
Davino is day-to-day: Defender and captain Duilio Davino will probably miss another match. Davino continues his rehab from a left toe fracture, and his recovery is day-to-day, Hyndman said.
